Moving from the cross-country (XC) tires we discussed, the Pirelli Scorpion™ Enduro S 29×2.4 is a completely different beast. While the “RC” models prioritize low weight and speed, the Enduro S (Soft Terrain) is designed for maximum grip in loose, loamy, or muddy conditions.1

Key Characteristics
-
The “S” Tread Pattern: “S” stands for Soft Terrain.2 It features tall, widely spaced knobs designed to “spike” into loose dirt or mud.3 The wide spacing allows the tire to shed mud quickly so it doesn’t become a “slick” in wet conditions.4
-
SmartGRIP Gravity Compound: This is a softer, stickier rubber than what you find on the XC RC. It is specifically formulated to provide more “damping” (absorbing hits) and chemical grip on slippery roots and wet rocks.
-
HardWALL vs. ProWALL:
-
HardWALL: This is Pirelli’s most robust casing for Enduro. It includes a thick rubber insert above the bead to prevent “pinch flats” (snake bites) and adds structural stability, allowing you to run very low pressures (down to 1.2 – 1.4 bar) without the tire squirming.
-
ProWALL: Lighter and more supple. Best used as a front tire for trail riding or as a rear tire if you aren’t riding in extremely sharp, rocky terrain.
-
Riding Experience
-
Grip: It is highly predictable in “loose-over-hard” and loamy conditions. It acts like a “cut-down mud spike,” offering massive braking traction.
-
Rolling Speed: Because the knobs are tall and the rubber is soft, it has significantly more rolling resistance than the XC RC. It is not a tire you want for a 50km XC marathon, but it’s perfect for winching up a fire road to bomb down a technical descent.
-
Durability: Pirelli’s single-compound approach means that even as the knobs wear down, the grip remains consistent (unlike some competitors where the “sticky” layer is only on the surface).
Recommended Setup
For a balanced Enduro or aggressive Trail bike, many riders use a “Mixed” setup:
-
Front: Scorpion Enduro S (for maximum steering grip).
-
Rear: Scorpion Enduro M (Mixed) or R (Rear Specific) for faster rolling and better braking longevity.
