The Pirelli Scorpion™ XC RC 29×2.40 is a World Cup-level cross-country racing tire designed for modern, technical XC courses.1 Following the 2025 refresh, this tire has become lighter and faster, specifically optimized for wider 30mm internal rims.2
Current 2026 Model Overview
The latest iteration (released in late 2024/2025) features the Race XC compound, which Pirelli claims is roughly 9% more rolling-efficient and 12% lighter than the original version.3

Key Performance Insights
-
The “Race XC” Compound: Unlike many competitors who use multiple rubber layers, Pirelli uses a single compound throughout. This means the grip remains consistent even as the tire wears down, rather than becoming slippery once the top layer is gone.
-
Wet Grip Performance: This tire is widely regarded as having superior wet-weather traction compared to rivals like the Maxxis Aspen. The SmartGRIP/Race XC rubber is “sticky” even on wet roots and rocks.
-
Rolling Resistance: While extremely fast off-road, some independent tests (like Bicycle Rolling Resistance) suggest it has higher rolling resistance on tarmac compared to the Vittoria Mezcal or Schwalbe Rick XC. It is a “pure dirt” tire.
-
Volume & Pressure: The 2.4″ width is a “true” high-volume tire. This allows you to run lower pressures (typically 1.3 – 1.6 bar for a 75kg rider), which increases traction on technical climbs and reduces fatigue.
